A 1.1 Water Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is Cohesion?
The attraction between molecules of the same substance, such as water molecules sticking together due to hydrogen bonding.
What is Adhesion?
The attraction between molecules of different substances, such as water molecules sticking to the surface of a glass.
What is specific heat capacity?
The amount of heat needed to raise the temperature one gram of substance by one degree celsius.
What is a polar molecule?
A neutral or unchanged molecule that has an asymmetric internal distribution of charge leading to partially positive and negative regions.
What is heat vaporization?
The amount of energy needed to change one gram of a liquid substance to gas at a constant temperature.
What is dissociation?
The process by which a compound or complex body breaks up into simpler constituents such as atoms and ions.
What biological process does the polar molecule support?
Facilitates biochemical reactions and nutrient transport within an organism.
What biological process does the specific heat capacity support?
Regulates the temperature of living organisms and their environment.
What biological process does high heat vaporization support?
Regulates body temperature through sweating and transpiration.
What biological process do cohesion and adhesion support?
Helps living organisms move in and on water and aids transportation of water and nutrients through plant tissue.
What biological process does density support?
Insulates aquatic environments.
How are electrons shared in a water molecule?
Through covalent bonding.
When did water originate on the earth?
4.5 billion years ago.
Where is the majority of the earth’s freshwater found?
Ice caps and Glaciers
How is water useful to cells?
It helps form the cell membrane and supports the double helix structure in DNA
How does water help form the cell membrane?
Water helps the phospholipids form bilayer which make up the cell membrane.
What is a hydrogen bond?
A temporary bond where the partially positive hydrogen atoms are attracted to the partially negative oxygen atom from a different molecule.
What sort of attraction does a hydrogen bond have?
Electrostatic Attraction
What is surface tension?
A property of liquid that allows it to resist an external force due to the cohesive nature of its molecules.
How does surface tension benefit living organisms?
It allows living organisms to move in and on water.
Why is water a good solvent?
The polar attraction interrupts intramolecular forces resulting in the dissociation of atoms.
Is glucose soluble or insoluble?
Soluble
Are Amino acids soluble or insoluble?
Soluble and Insoluble
Are fats and lipids soluble or insoluble?
Insoluble
