Q

Know all the types of murders, like multicide, spree, visionary, mass, serial killers/murders etc. & definitions

A

Multicide = lone-offender and victim incidents, they grab the largest proportion of media focus.
* Mass murder
* Spree murder
* Serial murder

Spree murder = “short-lived” killings take place over a short period with no emotional cooling-off period between murders

Visionary murder = rare because they suffer from some form of psychosis:
They frequently perceive voices or images that command them to kill.

Mass murder = a single event or several killings in a very brief period – “spree killing”

Serial killers = not been found to suffer from psychosis, but several have been diagnosed with personality disorder – widely known as sociopathy or psychopathy, which is now labeled “antisocial personality disorder.”

Serial murder = when a murderer kills on at least three occasions with an emotional cooling-off period between the incidents
* last days, weeks, months, or years

A

Weapons
G

Characteristics of murderers
The majority of serial killers who have been caught have been white, middle-aged males
Serial murders tend to kill strangers
* Targeting strangers may be a strategy designed to protect them from detection by authorities
* Serve to dehumanize the victims and make it easier to kill them
* Serial killers tend to target people who are vulnerable, choosing specific subsets of the population that they perceive to be easily victimized

Q

Holmes and Holmes

A

classify serial killers into six typologies based on the explicit or implicit motives of the killer:
Hedonistic lust killers =distinguished by their effort to obtain sexual pleasure from killing
* Direct sexual satisfaction from murdering his victims or by having sex with the corpse or by mutilating or cutting off sex organs
Thrill killers = derive sexual satisfaction from their murders, but require a live victim for sexual satisfaction
* Derive pleasure from torturing, dominating, terrorizing, humiliating their victims
Comfort killers = murder for creature comforts > financial gain
Power/control killers = murder to obtain a sense of domination and total control over their victims
* Sex is sometimes involved, the pleasure is primarily derived from the complete control the killer has over his victim
Mission killers = on a mission to rid the world of a group of people they perceive as unworthy or inferior in some way
Visionary killers = “rare” they suffer from some form of psychosis:
* They frequently perceive voices or images that command them to kill.
* However, only a small percentage of violent offenders have mental disorders like this, which is true for serial killers as well.

Q

James Fox & Jack Levin

A
  • They know right from wrong, know exactly what they are doing, and can control their desire to kill, but choose not to.
  • They are more cruel than crazy.
  • Their crimes may be sickening, but their minds are not necessarily sick.
  • Indeed, those assailants who are deeply confused or disoriented are generally not capable of the level of planning and organization necessary to conceal their identity from the authorities and, therefore, do not amass many victims.
