Q

“If they would rather die, they had better do it and decrease the surplus population.”

A

scrooge is speaking from a point of influence from capitalism.
therefore scrooge treats the poor as inhuman desensitised creatures, who he has no responsibility over.

the irony is that scrooge is the victim as he leads an empty life.

he is asking for less people but he already has no one and he is alone. surely he need s greater population so he can fill the void of loneliness.

Q

“His wealth is of no use to him. He don’t do any good with it.”

A

shows us how other people in the play view the protagonist and also see how other people view wealth. shows how he isn’t using his wealth for anything good even for himself he doesn’t use the heating and eats only vegetables.

he has tunnel vision as he is the victim and when your the victim you only see what you think is right.

HOPE;

They view him as a lost cause so when he changes it is a much bigger deal

Q

This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want.”

A

the boy represents society (ignorance, especially the wealthy)

capitalism creates immense poverty and great wealth for those who are already rich and don’t need any more money

the girl represents hr lowe classes who weant the basic need such as food water and shelter which are barley available to them because of the low wages that the upper class pay them.

they don’t want the luxuries they want the basics

the writes used “girls and boy” to persuade the reader by using the two most innocent beings in society.

a young girl was consider wed the most innocent thing in society not only because of the social status but also the patriarchy.

Q

“Hard and sharp as flint.”

A

objectifying scrooge as a hard material showing how you can’t get through it as all his beliefs barricade anyone from truly understanding and loving him. ( money, society, individualism (how he only cares about himself))

the spirits try and break down the walls that is stopping the reader from truly knowing scrooge and who he is as a person.

the reason why no one else can get close to scrooge as he is a “sharp” anyone who tries to get near his is instantly cut, hurt or dismissed by him.

for example, everytime he tries to get close to his nephew he pushes him away.

opposite of capitalism as they are all coming together to help one another.

where as scrooge who is representing capitalism is living alone and and doing everything happily together as the cratchits are all happily living together.

which shows why socialism is better
