Ebenezer Scrooge is presented as a greedy, ignorant man who is astonished at the presence of Jacob Marley’s ghost.

Dickens wider message was to bring change in society, so that everybody would be more charitable and giving, leaning towards a more socialist approach.
Stave 3 - How is the Ghost of Christmas Present use to continue Scrooge’s transformation?
He is used to continue Scrooge’s transformation by showing him what he could have that he has avoided so far.
Stave 3 - What is the significance of family in this stave?
It shows how much happier a family is when together, even when their situation is worse. This shows how they work through problems together.
Stave 3 - What is Dickens’ wider message about society? How do we see this?
Dickens’ message is that family is the most important thing one could have.
Stave 4 - How does Dickens’ use the reactions to Scrooge’s death to finalise his transformation?
Many expressed their indifference for Scrooge’s death, while those who shouldn’t like Scrooge felt the most sorrow and thought they could’ve done more. This shows him the strength in kindness, changing him for the better.
Stave 4 - How is the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come presented differently to the others?
Unlike the others, he is the only silent ghost. This is so Scrooge will change on his own without being simply ordered to do so.

His wider message is how family is the core thing to making society function as, no matter your living conditions, family will keep you optimistic. Those who are not optimistic will treat others harshly, not letting society progress.
Stave 5 - How does Scrooge in Stave 5 contrast with Scrooge in Stave 1?
Scrooge in Stave 5 has learnt about giving, and how those less fortunate than him rely on his kindness to survive. This contrasts with Stave 1 Scrooge, who believes that every person has to look after themselves.
Stave 5 - What is Dicken’s trying to say about the effect of opening your heart to family and kindness?
He is saying how opening your heart to family will make you live a merrier, and longer, life.
Stave 5 - How does he show his hope for mankind?
He shows his hope for mankind by anonymously donating the turkey to the Cratchit family, due to the disabled Tiny Tim.
