Adventive:
adjective or noun denoting a weed.
Agriculture
: all work aimed at transforming the natural environment to produce plants and animals for human use.
Approved dose:
effective dose of an agent applied to a crop to tackle a target organism such as a parasite or pest.
Agricultural holding:
a company formed with a view to generating agricultural produce and characterized by single management and its own production facilities. An agricultural holding is considered to be any facility over a certain size, which may be either 1 hectare of agricultural land in use, 20 ares of specialist crops, or production exceeding a threshold (1 cow or 6 breeding ewes, etc.).
AI: Artificial Insemination:
Artificial Insemination: the process of placing a dose of fresh or frozen semen in the genital tracts of female animals using appropriate instruments.
Agricultural census:
national surveys commissioned by the ministry aimed at characterizing all agricultural holdings.
AA:
Agricultural area in use (SAU or Superficie Agricole Utilisée in French). This includes arable land, permanent grassland (superficie toujours en herbe - STH), and permanent crops. It does not include woodland and forest.
Blocking:
division of farmland into separate parts known as “blocks”, each allocated a specific crop during a crop season.
Bale:
a rounded compressed bundle of fodder (hay or straw) held together by twine or netting.
Balance sheet:
: an accounting tool used to provide a snapshot of a company’s financial situation at any given time. It provides an overview of the company’s assets and financing balance. This is expressed as assets and liabilities.
Bere:
the name traditionally given to 6-row winter barley.
Boar:
a male breeding swine.
Clay:
soil texture component composed of particles whose diameter is less than 2 microns.
Crusting:
phenomenon whereby the top centimeters of soil disintegrate as a result of rainfall.
Cowpat:
bovine feces.
CAD :
Contrat d’Agriculture Durable (Sustainable Agriculture Contract). This mechanism replaces the CTE (Contrat Territorial d’Exploitation) or Regional Farming Agreement suspended in 2002.
CIPAN:
Culture Intermédiaire Piège à Nitrates Concentrés (Intermediate Crop for Concentrated Nitrate Capture): refers to all feed intended for livestock that is not fodder and is used in smaller quantities than fodder.
CMV:
Complément Minéral Vitaminé (Vitamin Mineral Supplement), a food supplement rich in vitamins and minerals supplied in various forms (mineral lick, powder, etc.) to livestock.
Concentrates=concentrated feed:
feed that is generally high in energy and/or protein providing animals with maximum intake in smaller portions, hence the term “concentrates”.
Croskill:
a roller used to compact soil and break up clods.
Croskillette:
a type of lightweight croskill used to compact topsoil.
Catch crop:
a temporary crop interposed between two main crops.
Cull:
in zootechnics, the act of ceasing to use a breeding animal. Such animals are generally slaughtered.
Crop rotation:
a sequence of crops grown on a given plot.
