What do feminists reject the most?
The ‘march of progress’ view.
Why do they hate this view?
They argue that only little has changed- men and women are still unequal.
How does Oakley criticise Willmott and Young?
She says that the family is not symmetrical- even though the ‘claim’ says otherwise, men do the bare minimum such as making breakfast on one occasion only.
What does Oakley conclude from her study of housewives?
15% of husbands participate in housework and 25% in childcare.
Oakley on husbands and childcare?
Husbands were most likely to share childcare only with ‘pleasure’- e.g taking an interest.
What was a ‘good father’?
Plays with his children in evenings and ‘take them off her hands’ on a Sunday morning.
How did the image of the ‘good father’ disadvantage the mothers?
Without childcare, there was still the housework and so they were left to it.
What did Boulton find?
20% of husbands had a major role in childcare.
