What is Lexis and semantics?
How word choices convey meaning
Lexis= vocabulary
Semantics=meaning
What is grammar?
The way individual words are structured and arranged together in sentences.
What is phonology?
The way a piece of text is spoken or written.
What is pragmatics?
The underlying meaning of behind words, depending on context.
What’s register?
The level of formality.
What’s figurative language?
A metaphoric simile.
Focusing on imagery between objects and concepts.
What’s a semantic field?
Group of lexis which have a unified meaning.
What is Monosyllabic lexis?
One-syllable word.
What’s anaphora?
Repetition of lexis at the start of a sentence.
What’s Jargon?
Subject specific lexis.
What’s personification?
Giving objects human qualities.
What’s a superlative?
Saying something is the best or worse it could be.
What’s an intensifier?
Modified adjective or adverb with emotion
E.g: her feet were really cold.
What’s a hyperbole?
Exaggeration.
What’s polysyndeton?
Repetition of and in a sentence.
What’s a dynamic verb?
A verb with progressive action.
E.g I’m going
What is tone?
The emotive voice in a text.
What is antithesis?
Opposites within a clause.
What is hypophora?
A question that is answered by the writer/speaker.
What’s a triplet?
Three adjectives/ adverbs in a sequence.
What is archaic?
Words that are less colloquial.
What’s an adverb?
A word describing a verb
E.g she ran quickly.
What’s an apposition?
A noun/noun phrase which is immediately followed by another for clarification.
What’s a noun phrase?
A noun and a modifier
