What is growth?
It is a physiological change. Increase in mass and dimension.
What is development?
The acquisition of skills and abilities through the life stages.
What are the life stages?
Infancy, early childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle adulthood, later adulthood.
What is the age range for infancy?
0-2
What is the age range for early childhood?
3-8
What is the age range for adolescence?
9-18
What is the age range for early adulthood?
19-45
What age range is middle adulthood?
46-65
What age range is later adulthood?
65+
Physical milestones for infnacy
Control of the head, rolling over, crawling, standing alone, climbing onto furniture, throwing a large ball, kicking a ball.
Opens hands to grasp finger, briefly grasp a rattle, moving objects from hand to hand, using finger and thumb to hold small objects, places toys, builds tower with blocks, turns a page, uses a spoon or fork.
Physical milestones for early childhood
Using pedals to drive a tricycle, kicking and throwing a large ball, hopping on each foot separately, skipping, good body coordination
Use a pencil to copy letters, build a tower with cubes, dress and undress on their own, able to draw detailed pictures.
Physical milestones for adolescence
Secondary sexual characteristics (pubic hair begins to grow, growth spurt, acne develops)
Mood swings, emotional changes
Physical milestones for early adulthood
Peak physical maturity (full height and maximum fitness), perimenopause (oestrogen levels decrease, hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, loss of libido)
Physical milestones for middle adulthood
Menopause (end of female fertility), reduction in sexual interests, shrinking of sex organs
Physical milestones for late adulthood
Loss of strength and muscle tone, skin loses elasticity, senses deteriorating, lungs are weaker, grey hair.
What is a milestone?
An ability achieved by most children at a certain age.
What are developmental norms?
A description of an average set of expectations that relate to a child’s age.
Fine motor skills
Small movements using the smaller muscles in the body.
Gross motor skills
Large movements using large muscles in the body.
Growth rates can..
vary between boys and girls.
How is a newborn’s growth recorded?
Centile chart.
Records height, weight and head circumference.
