What was the big idea of surrealism?
a group of artists who made art inspired by their dreams.
When and where was surrealism art?
1920s - 1940s in Europe and the USA
Who was this movement led by?

What was surrealism a revoltion against?
A revolution against the oppressive rules and looking to the mind as a source of social liberation.

What are the 3 types of surrealist art?
Automatism, Surreal Objects, Artworks inspired by dreams
What is automatism?
Automatism is when people do things automatically without thinking – like doodling or word association.
What is surreal objects?
Strange, illogical and often impossible combinations of everyday objects.
What are artworks inspired by dreams?
These were often landscape paintings, which showed the strange imagery of dreams in a very realistic (or hyper-real) way.
What are the 4 tecniques in surrealist artworks? (R,T,D,M)
- REVERSING THE LAWS OF NATURE
- TRANSFORMATION
- DISLOCATION
- METAMORPHOSIS
What is reversing the laws of nature? (2)
- Things flowing in opposite directions
- Natural things thriving in unnatural places
What is tranformation? (3)
- Familiar object transformed into something strange and disturbing
- Changing the scale - making things smaller or larger
- Sticking unlikely things together
What is dislocation?
Familiar objects are placed where they shouldn’t be.
What is metamorphosis?
Where an object morphs or changes into an object or person or something else
