Absorbtion Flashcards
(5 cards)
- active transport
Sodium ions are actively transports out of the epithelial cells of the ileum and into the blood stream.
This causes the concentration of the sodium ions to decrease
- Concentration gradient
The sodium ions in the ileum diffuse down their concentration gradient into the epithelial cells.
The sodium ions diffuse through a co transporter protein
- Co transporter
When sodium ions bind to a co transporter protein, amino acids or monosaccharides also bind to the protein.
- Conformational change
Binding of amino acids or monosaccharides causes a conformational change in the protein.
The conformational change transports the amino acids or monosaccharides into the epithelial cells.
- Epithelial cells
inside the epithelial cells, the amino acids or monosaccharides are used in reactions or absorbed into the blood stream.
