What are the main features of the crime control model?
A
- Suppression of crime - threat to freedom (prioritises catching/punishing, deterring, preventing
- Presumption of guilty - trusts police
- Police free from legal technicalties that prevent investigation e.g. phone tapping, searches, DNA testing
- Conveyor builty - speedy prosecution
- Few innocenet people occasionally convicted by mistake BUT worth for convicting large mo. of guilty

What are the features of the due process model?
A
- Power of state = threat to individual freedom e.g. police, prosecutors, judges
- Presumption of innocence - accused innocent until proven guilty after fair trial
- Less faith in police e.g. incompetence, dishonesty = needs to be safeguarded by due process rules that investigations/trials must follow e.g. arrest, questioning, legal representation, admissibility, disclosure
- Obsrtacle course to secure conviction
- Guilty sometimes free on “technicality”
- Rights of accused rather than victim

Right-wing, conservative approach - zero tolerance policing, police have greater powers

A
Punishment reinforces society’s moral boundaries - allows society to expres moral outrage/strengthen social cohesion
