Q

What does Freud suggest

A

According to Freud’s theory we conform to society’s expectations and obey its rules because our superego tells us to do so. Our Superego tells us what is right and wrong and inflicts guilt feeling on us if we fail to do as it urges. Our Superego develops through early socialization within the family. Its function is to restrain the selfish ‘animal’ urges of the id. If we acted upon these urges, they would often lead to anti-social behavior and criminal behavior. The superego allows us to exercise self- control and behave in ways that are deemed socially acceptable.

Q

How does Culture link to internal social control

A

The culture that we belong to also becomes a part of us through socialization. We learn to accept its norms, values and traditions as a part of our identity. If we conform to the traditions of the culture, then it confirms one’s identity but also confirms that we are a part of a particular community.

Q

How does internalization of social rules and morality link to internal social control

A

Both our super ego and traditions become a part of our personality even though they both start as something on the outside e.g. our parents, rules and values in the case of our superego or those of our culture or social group in the case of traditions.

In both cases we internalize these rules through socialization either through our parents or through a larger social group e.g. school, institutions or religion. The social rules that we learn become a part of our own moral code.
