What is deviance?
Behaviour that deviates from society’s norms
What are norms?
Rules of expectations of what is right and wrong
What are examples of norms?
- Uniforms/ dress codes
- Being quiet in a library/doctor’s waiting room
- A child playing in a park
What are moral codes?
A set of ethics that you are expected to follow
What is an example of a moral code?
- Doctor/ Nurse confidentiality
What are values?
A general set of principles about acceptable and unacceptable behaviour
What are some values in society?
- The belief that society is fair and meritocratic
- Protecting childhood innocence
How is social change caused?
Differences in values
What is admired deviance?
Deviance that is seen as heroic
- admiration rather than disapproval
e.g., firefighter, Rosa Parks
What is odd deviance?
Deviance that most people wouldn’t take part in
E.g., Actors & musicians (male artists dressing in traditionally feminine clothes), fashion,
shopping in a dressing gown and slippers
What is bad deviance?
deviance perceived as undesirable by society
e.g. murder, rape
Change in attitude toward homosexuality
Murder being acceptable in war
Evaluation of criminal behaviour and deviance
Not all behaviour that is deviant is negative, as social change and innovation have come as a result of deviance
Evolution as a society is dependent upon deviant behaviours to change norms & values of society
What does the ideology created by criminologists about sanctions believe?
The use of sanctions by society and police are used to control is to make us behave and follow the unwritten and written rules of society
What is social definition of criminal behaviour?
ways in which people in society determine what behaviour is acceptable
What is the legal definition of criminal behaviour?
any action forbidden by law
What are the two main concepts behind crime?
Men’s Rea (criminal intention)
Actus Reus (illegal behaviour)
What are some criminal and deviance acts?
- Burglary
- Murder
- Illegal downloading
What are some examples of deviant acts?
- Swearing
- Shouting in a library
- Spitting on the floor
What are court sanctions?
- Custodial sentences (prison sentences- mandatory and life)
- Community (Some form of work in the community or some form of order to rehabilitate the offender)
- Fines (monetary charges/ penalties)
- Discharge (dismissal from court and let go free, usually when the offences isn’t as serious)
What are some non-court sanctions?
- Caution by the police (e.g. swearing at an officer, dropping litter)
- Penalty notices- can be issued by the police where an individual may have been behaving inappropriately in public
- Conditional cautions by the police (e.g. Making an apology to the victim, Attending anger management courses)
