Q

What are examples of internal forms of social control

A
  • Tradition - Peoples upbringing and traditions teaches them to not break law.
  • Internalisation - When somebody agrees/believes in social norms so therefore follows them as they are internalised.
  • Rational Ideology - Conscience guides us to abide by law otherwise we will feel guilty.

EXAMPLE: Freud’s physcodynamic theory suggests that we conform to society due to our superego as it tells us from right and wrong and leaves us with feelings of guilt if we do wrong.

Q

What are examples of external forms of social control

A
  • Coercion/threat or force - Physical/non-violent forms people to abide by he law. e.g. prison
  • Fear of punishment - used as a fear monger. INDIVIDUAL DETERRENCE punishes offenders to stop them from committing crimes again.
GENERAL DETERRENCE fear of punishments prevents society as a whole from committing similar crimes. e.g. life sentences.

EXAMPLE: Control theory by reckless suggests people conform because they are controlled by bonds to society and criminal acts happen when the bonds are weak.
