Who was Henry I?
William Rufus died in August 1100, and was succeeded by his brother, Henry. Henry was the youngest son of William the Conqueror.
When did Henry I become king?
He became king of England in 1100, and was also duke of Normandy from 1107.
How did Henry I gain control in England and Normandy?
Robert Curthose still wanted to be king of England as well as duke of Normandy. However, Henry was able to consolidate his power.
❖In 1101, Henry and Robert reached an agreement, in which they would each stay in their own territory.
❖However, Henry attacked Normandy, and defeated his brother at the Battle of Tinchebrai in 1106.
❖By 1107, Henry was the ruler of England and Normandy and the two lands were united again.
❖Henry put his brother Robert in prison, where he remained for the rest of his life.
