Accessory organs (liver, gallbladder & pancreas) Flashcards
(6 cards)
Where is bile produced & stored?
Produced in liver
Stored in gall bladder
Released via bile duct into small intestine
Pancreas is both an endocrine & exocrine gland
What does this mean?
Endocrine - secretes hormones into bloodstream
Exocrine - secretes digestive enzymes into small intestine via the pancreatic duct
Main enzymes released by pancreas
Lipase
Amylase
Proteases (trypsin)
What are brush border enzymes?
Small intestine’s own enzymes found on cell membranes.
Inc maltase, lactase, sucrase & peptidase
Final stage of food digestion before absorption
Where are fatty acids absorbed into & what helps this process?
Absorbed into lymphatic system with help of bile
Bile is important for the absorption of fats - it emulsifies them
Where is main site of absorption?
What adaptations help this?
Small intestine
Has villi & microvilli to increase surface area
Also has a thin layer of mucus & crypts
