Thomas Mann - The Magic Mountain, 1924 (critique of European society) - Artists free to criticise politics, big business, the war, and the Church
- A new artistic style called “new objectivity” developed with artists such as George Grosz + Otto Dix (more abstract, unsentimental realism vs. Hitler’s preferred Expressionism)

A
- Epic sci-fi films like Metropolis (1927) by Fritz Lang became popular
- German actress Marlene Dietrich became an international star in von Sternberg’s “The Blue Angel” (1930)

- New style emerged called the Bauhaus with slogan “Art and Technology - a new unity”
- Walter Gropius and Paul Klee designed furniture, apartments and town halls from the Bauhaus design college in Dessau

- Theatres, night clubs and cabarets became popular in towns/cities (like Berlin)
- In 1927, there were 900 dance bands in Berlin alone
- Modern forms of dance, sexual songs and open criticism of political leaders flourished
