Acid and alkalis second form v2 Flashcards
(17 cards)
List of all the acids you know
Hydrochloric acid, lemon juice, vinegar, shampoo, cola,
List of all the alkalis you know.
Sodium hydroxide, bleach, soaps
Explain why rubbing an alkali like bicarbonate of soda onto an acidic bee sting can ease the pain?
As in a bee sting there is acid meaning the Alkali cancels out the effects of the acid.
What does more hydrogen ions in a solution mean
(Acid is a chemical that dissolves in water to produce particles called hydrogen ions (H+).
The more hydrogen ions in a solution the more acidic the solution is.
What does more hydroxide ions in a solution mean
(An alkali is formed when a chemical dissolves in water to produce particles called hydroxide ions (OH).)
The more hydroxide ions there are in a solution the more alkaline the solution is.
What happens when you mix an acid and an alkali together,
A type of reaction occurs called a neutralisation reaction.
What is created when hydrogen and hydroxide ions mix
Water
What forms when acid and alkalis react
(NOT NEUTRALISATION)
When acids and alkalis react they form two products: water and a new compound called a salt.
Common alkali
sodium hydroxide
potassium hydroxide
calcium hydroxide
Salt name begins with
sodium
potassium
calcium
How is the name of a salt constructed
The name of the salt can be constructed from the names of the acid and alkali used to make it.
Common acid
hydrochloric acid
nitric acid
Sulfuric acid
Salt name ends with
chloride
nitrate
sulfate
Alkali sodium hydroxide / acid hydrochloric acid
Sodium chloride
Alkali potassium hydroxide / acid nitric acid
Potassium nitrate
Alkali potassium hydroxide / acid sulfuric acid
Potassium sulfate
