ACID AND BASE Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are acids and bases?
Acids and bases are chemical compounds with opposite characteristics.
Write a short note on acids and bases based on the Brønsted-Lowry concept.
Acids donate protons (H⁺), while bases accept protons (H⁺).
What is an acid?
An acid is a substance that turn blue litmus paper red and has a ph less than 7.
What is a neutralization reaction?
A reaction between an acid and a base that produces salt and water.
State three physical properties of acids.
Sour taste, corrosive, pH less than 7.
What is a base?
A base is a substance that turns red litmus paper blue and has a ph greater than 7
State two chemical properties of acids
Reacts with bases to form salt & water.
Reacts with metals to produce hydrogen gas.
State three physical properties of bases.
Bitter taste, slippery feel, pH greater than 7.
State two chemical properties of bases.
Reacts with acids to form salt & water.
Reacts with ammonium salts to release ammonia gas.
What is double decomposition?
A reaction where two compounds exchange their ions to form two new compounds.
Name two examples of each type of acid and base:
Strong acid:Hydrochloric acid (HCl),Sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄)
- Weak acid:Citric acid, Acetic acid
- Strong base:Sodium hydroxide (NaOH),Potassium hydroxide (KOH)
-Weak base: Ammonia (NH₃), Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂)
What is the pH scale?
A scale that measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution.
