Acid-Base Reactions Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is an acid and a base according to Browsted-Lowry?
Acid = Proton donor Base = Proton acceptor
The solution in the burette (acid) is referred to as the ___
Titrant
The solution in the conical flask (base) is referred to as the ___
Titrand
What is the equivalent or stoichiometric point?
It is the point at which a stoichiometric amount of the acid reacts with a stoichiometric amount of the base. Here, enough titrant has been added to completely react with the base.
How do you identify the equivalence point?
It is often marked by a colour change on the addition of an indicator.
Say something about the oxidation state of oxygen
In a compound, it is always -2, except in peroxides where it is -1.
Say something about the oxidation state of hydrogen
Its oxidation state is always +1 but when it combines with a metal, it becomes -1.
What is an oxidizing agent?
- Electron acceptor
- Substance which is reduced
- Substance in which O.N. decreases in the positive direction
What is a reducing agent?
- Electron donor
- Substance which is oxidized
- Substance in which O.N. increases in the positive direction
What is oxidation?
- Addition of oxygen
- Removal of hydrogen
- Addition of an electronegative element
- Removal of electrons
What is reduction?
- Removal of oxygen
- Addition of hydrogen
- Removal of an electronegative element, addition of electropositive
- Addition of electrons
