What is an acid?
A substance that produces hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water
What is an alkali?
A substance that produces hydroxide ions(OH-) when dissolved in water
Common acids
Vinegar, citrus fruits, stomach acid(hydrochloric acid), coffee, coca cola
Common alkalis
Toothpaste,soap,bleach,egg,baking powder, egg,bicarbonate of soda
What is an indicator?
Substances that change colour when they come in contact with acids or alkalis
What colour does acids turn blue litmus paper?
Red in a acid
What colour does alkalis turn red litmus paper?
Blue in alkali
What is ph?
A measure of how acid or alkaline a substance is on a scale of 1-14
What is neutralisation?
A chemical reaction between an acid and an alkaline substance if u add the right amount of each it will produce a neutral substance
