Acids And Bases Flashcards
(7 cards)
Acids
Anything dissolves in water
Acids are substances which ionize(form ions) in water to produce H+.
Strong acid, more acidic = lots of H+ ions produced
Weak acid, less acidic = not a lot of H+ ions produced
Acids are corrosive, eat away metal, wood, clothing, skin. Also have a sour test
Bacteria feed on food in your mouth, produce weak acids slowly causing teeth decay
Bases
Substances produce OH- ions in water. Have a soapy feel and are bitter in taste.
If a base can dissolve in water, it is alkali or an alkaline solution.
Bases are caustic, can burn just like acids
pH Scale
Measures the concentration of H+ ions in solution
From 0 to 14 tells you how acidic or basic a solution is
Acidic solutions have a pH less than 7
Basic (alkali) solutions have a pH greater than 7
pH of 7 tells the solution is neutral(at 25 degrees)
Indicator
Substances that changes colour at different pH’s
Giving a quick way of determining an approximate pH of a solution
If acidic, paper turns red
If basic, paper turns blue
Neutralisation Reaction
Acid + Base —> Salt + Water
Called neutralisation reaction because water is neutral, has a pH of 7
Acids + Metal
Acids + Metal —> Salt + Hydrogen Gas
Acids + Carbonates
Acids + Carbonates —> Carbon dioxide + water + salt
