Acids And Bases Flashcards
(12 cards)
Define bronsted Lowry acid and conjugate base
Bronstead Lowry acid donates one mole of a proton and conjugate base is the acid that donates the proton
Define bronstead lowry base and conjugate acid
BL base is A proton accepter and conjugate acid is the base that gained a proton and becomes positive
Define strong acid
An acid that the H+ fully dissociates in water
A proton donor
Define weak acid
An acid that the h+ partially dissociate in water
Define a strong base
Substance that fully dissociates into OH- ions in water
A proton acceptor
Define a weak base
A substance that partially dissociates into OH- ions in eater
Define an alkali
Base which dissolves in water and releases oh- ions
Reaction of acid + metal
- forms salt and hydrogen
- ionic equation example:
2H+ + Zn = Zn2+ + h2
Reaction of acid + carbonate
- forms co2, h20 and salt
For example
2H+ + CuCO3= Cu2+ + H20 and CO2
Reaction of acid + metal oxides
- metal oxides are a base so form salt and water
- 2H+ + MgO = Mg2+ + h2o
List the 6 strong acids
- HCl
- HBr
- HI
-HNO3 - H2S04
- HClO4
List strong bases
- NaOH
- Ba(OH)2
- KOH
- Ca(OH)2
- often found in group 1 or 2
