Acids and Bases Flashcards
Bases
Indigestion tablets Toothpaste Soap Shampoo Bread soda Window cleaner
Bases in the lab
Sodium hydroxide - NaOH
Limewater - Ca(OH)2
Acid
Lemons Vinegar Vitamin C Grapes Rhubarb Fizzy drinks Tea Apples
pH
Tell how acidic or basic a substance is by measuring something called pH
Alkali
A base that dissolves in water eg. drain cleaner (sodium hydroxide)
Neutral
If something is neither an acid not a base and has a pH of 7.
Neutralisation
If an acid and bases are mixed together in the right concentration, then they neutralise each other. A salt and water is produced.
Indigestion
Excess stomach avid takes an antacid (anti-acid) which is a base
Wash sting
It’s alkaline. This needs to be treated with an acid eg. Vinegar
Bee sting
It’s acidic. Rubbing a base eg. Bread soda
Titration
An experiment to neutralise an acid (hydrochloride acid) with a base (sodium hydroxide)
The products of titration
Salt and water
Indicator paper
An indicator changes colour to tell us if something is an acid or a base
Eg. Litmus is the dye on the indicator paper
Acids turn blue paper
Red (acid)
Bases turn red paper
Blue (base)
