Electron acceptor
What makes a good acid?
Stable radicals w weaker C-H bonds
Weaker x-H bonds are key. Allows for easier donation.
What makes a good base?
Higher pKa
How do you determine relative acidity?
Determine conjugated OR use %S character.
Greater S = more acidic.
Carboxylic acid = most acidic
Followed by alcohol.
Anime/amide = most basic
How do you determine relative basicity?
Determine acidity and then FLIP ORDER OVER.
Amines and amides are the most basic often.
What out for conjugated that don’t exist!!!
What are the worst bases/acids?
When certain compounds are neutral/not at all a base or an acid.
Acidity trend by size?
Larger molecules = more acidic because of weaker bonds
Acidity trend by electro negativity?
Higher electro = more acidic
