Define tissue
ensemble of similar cells from same embryonic origin that together carry out a specific function
Four main tissue types
connective, muscle, nervous, epithelial
Function of connective tissue
protects, supports, connects, or separates different types of tissues and organs
Function of muscle tissue
posture, and body support, locomotion and heat production
Function of epithelial tissue
secretion, absorption, filtration, and protection
Function of nervous system
sensory input, integration, control and regulation of muscles and glands, homeostasis, and mental activity
5 types of epithelial tissue
simple squamous, simple cuboidal, simple columnar, stratified squamos, stratified cuboidal, stratified columnar
Function and ex. location of simple squamos
absorption, secretion, and filtration; air sacs of lungs
Function and ex. location of simple cuboidal
absorption, secretion, and filtration; kidney tubules, glands
Function and ex. location of simple columnar
absorption, secretion, and filtration; small and large intestine
Function and ex. location of stratified squamos
protection; skin, mouth, nose, vagina. it’s either keratinized or nonkeratinized
Function and ex. location of stratified cuboidal
protection; ducts of large glands (sweat, salivary)
Function and ex. location of stratified columnar
protection; ducts of large glands
Function and ex. location of pseudostratified
looks like stratified but are all attached to the basement membrane; trachea, respiratory tract
goblet cells
found in respiratory and intestinal tracts; secrets main component of mucus;
where is psudostratified (ciliated) columnar epithelium found?
respiratory tract
What is keratinized epithelium
layers of dead squamous cells which is waterproof and reduces evaporation from underlying tissues. they’re found on skin. keeps it moisturized.
How can you tell a pseudostratified columnar epithelium
has goblets, cilated, lots of nucleus
Transitional epithelium
blocks diffusion, urinary bladder, highly modified stratified squamous that forms the lining of only a few organs. these organs have ability to stretch. filled up, the epithelium is thin
