Active Recall Flashcards

(31 cards)

1
Q

What’s the difference between active and passive learning?

A

Active learning is engaging the content in a way that activates your memory so you can pull the information out “from scratch”.

While passive learning is reading, note taking, highlighting and going over your notes merely by reading or watching your content.

Q

Why does active recall/ learning work?

A

It works because it requires you to utilise your hippocampus which is responsible for memory formation, transfer and consolidation. By recalling what you have learned you are activating this part of the brain and reaffirming ideas for long term storage.

Q

What’s the best method of active recall/learning prescribed by Dr. Cal Newport and what was his book called?

A

His book was called “How to be a straight A Student”. And he suggests that in between your study breaks or between chapters to speak out loud what you just learned without looking at your notes and pretend you’re teaching it.

Q

How does this link well with the Pomodoro method?

A

The pomodoro method engages what is called primary and recency, where you learn in segments of 20 minutes with a 5 minute break in between. In the 5 minutes you completely stop thinking of your study and then in the next few minutes of your 20 minutes segment you reflect on what you just learned without looking at your notes. Pretending your teaching has proven to work best

Q

What is active recall?

A

Active recall is a learning technique that involves actively retrieving information from memory, rather than passively reviewing it.

Q

What is the testing effect?

A

The testing effect is a psychological phenomenon where long-term memory is enhanced when information is retrieved during a test.

15
Q

How does active recall affect metacognition?

A

Active recall enhances metacognitive awareness by helping learners assess their own understanding and retention.

16
Q

What is one common tool used for implementing active recall?

17
Q

True or False: Active recall is more beneficial for younger learners than older learners.

18
Q

In a study, what percentage of students reported higher confidence after using active recall?

19
Q

What does the term ‘retrieval practice’ refer to?

A

Retrieval practice refers to the act of recalling information from memory, which is a key component of active recall.

20
Q

True or False: Active recall can help reduce the effects of forgetting.

21
Q

What is the ideal interval for spaced repetition when using active recall?

A

Intervals should gradually increase over time, typically starting from one day to several weeks.

22
Q

What is one reason why active recall is effective for learning complex subjects?

A

It promotes deeper processing of information by requiring learners to engage with the material actively.

23
Q

What is the role of feedback in active recall?

A

Feedback helps learners correct mistakes and reinforce correct information, enhancing the learning process.

24
Q

Fill in the blank: Active recall is often contrasted with __________, where the learner reviews information without testing themselves.

A

passive review

25
What is one challenge associated with implementing active recall?
It may require more initial effort and discipline compared to passive study methods.
26
True or False: The benefits of active recall diminish over time if not practiced regularly.
True
27
What cognitive process is primarily engaged during active recall?
Memory retrieval
28
How does active recall contribute to neuroplasticity?
It strengthens neural pathways associated with the retrieved information, promoting brain adaptability.
29
What is one way to incorporate active recall into daily study routines?
Regularly testing oneself on the material learned, such as through quizzes or flashcards.
30
True or False: Active recall is only effective for memorization tasks.
False
