What is a concentrated solution?
A concentrated solution is when there are lots of solutes in a small amount of solvent. Also this is a lower water potential, lower water concentration and a higher solute concentration.
What is a dilute solution?
A dilute solution is when there are a small amount of solute in a large amount of solvent. Also this is when there is a higher water potential, higher water concentration and a lower solute potential.
What is crenation in animal cells? Why does it happen?
This is when the shrinkage of cells that occur when the surrounding solution is hypertonic to the cellular cytoplasm. Water leaves the cells by osmosis, which causes the plasma membrane to wrinkle and the cellular contents to condense.
What is lysis in animal cells? Why does it happen?
Lysis refers to the breaking down of the membrane of a cell, often by viral, enzymic, or osmotic mechanisms that compromise its integrity.
What happens when water enters a plant cell? Why?
When water enters cells the cell will expand and swell up. This is due to there low concentration in the cell so the water wants to enter the cell. Also the inside of the cell will become more dilute due to theres more water in it.
What happens when water leaves a plant cell? Why?
When water leaves the cell it will shrink and become more concentrated because there is less water.
What is active transport?
This is the movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane into a region of higher concentration, assisted by enzymes and requiring energy.
