Eustachian tube is short, horizontal and function poorly
What are the clinical feature of otitis media
Ear pain
fever
-every child with fever must have tympanic membranes examined
What pathogens cause Otitis media
Viral: RSV, rhinovirus
Bacteria: Pneumococcus, H influenzae
what are the complications of Acute otitis media?
Mastoiditis
Meningitis
What is the treatment for acute otitis media?
Amoxicillin
Regular analgesia
How do children with otitis media w/ effusion present?
After recurrent ear infections
Asymptomatic - possible hearing loss
Ear drum seen to be dull and retracted
Usually spontaneously resolves
Most common cause of conductive hearing loss in children
Can intefere with speech and language development
