Addiction Flashcards
(3 cards)
What do opiates do
Work on endorphins
Large releases of dopamine
Explain the different ways drugs can work
They can increased levels of natural neurotransmitters
Increase of dopamine-remember this event
Opiates (and meth release dopamine)
Cocaine-blocks the reabsorption of dopamine and neroepinephrine
Mimic the activity of neurotransmitters-
Nicotine-acetylcholine
Alcohol-binds to the acetylcholine and serotonine receptors
Explain the pathophysiology to tolerance (List the different ways tolerance can happen)
Increase in number of receptors-example large amounts of nicotine in the body will increase the amount of acetylcholine receptors-so when nicotine levels decrease the body exhibit symptoms of withdrawal
Increase the release of excitatory neurotransmitter’s-example alcohol trying to balance the system
Increase dopamine degrading enzyme
Depletion of neurotransmitters
