Q

What is the role of carbon in steel?

A

The most important alloying element in steels, it controls strength and hardness.
Increasing carbon content increases hardness and tensile strength but reduces ductility.
Enables hardenability an influences weldability as higher C content can be more challenging to weld as it increases the tendency to form martensite.
