Q

why is PA important for adolescents ?

A
  • Health behaviours established in adolescents carry through to adulthood.
  • First major decline in Pa
  • Health consequence of inactivity:
  • Obesity (prevention is crucial)
  • Increases in diabetes in adolescents (secondary health problems)
  • Impacts on mental health.

Lancet(2021)

A
  • Higher levels of Pa are associated with greater general physical self-concept and higher self-efficacy, but effects sizes are small.

Q

roles of schools in PA in adolescents

A
  • Availability of within-school sports and activity is positively related to overall adolescents Pa.
  • Research involving older adolescents (15-19 years) is scarce.
  • Co-designed with adolescents.
  • Interventions required context-specific support for schools to ensure effective implementation and sustainability.

Q

Bunr2Learn findings

A
  • Participation in teacher facilitated HIIT breaks improved older adolescents’’ cardiorespiratory (CRF) at the primary endpoint of 6 months.
  • Improvements in CRF were not sustained once teachers ceased the delivery of HIIT breaks during curriculum time.
  • Improvements were found in a range of secondary outcomes including muscular fitness, hair cortisol concentrations, steps/day during school hours and HIIT self-efficacy.
  • Participants who were overweight or obese at baseline had the largest improvements in cortisol, mental health and cognitive function.

Q

social support - PLAN-a

A
  • Peer-led Pa Intervention for adolescent for girls
  • Analysis showed evidence of a 6.09 minute (95% Cl = 1.43, 10.760 between- arms difference in weekday MVPA at Time 2 in favour of the intervention arm.
  • Poor implementation probably explains the lack of consistency in the effectiveness of different types of Pa interventions targeting interventions have been delivered as intended.
