Adrenal Physiology Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is the vascular supply to the kidney?
Superior suprarenal artery from inferior phrenic
Middle suprarenal artery from abdo aorta
Inferior suprarenal artery from renal artery
Right suprarenal vein into IVC
Left suprarenal vein into . L renal vein
What is bad about the rich blood supply to the adrenals?
It lends itself to frequent metastasis of malignancies
What happens to the adrenals, particular after post-partum haemorrhage?
The body goes into circulatory shock and this causes ischaemic necrosis
What are the four parts of the adrenal cortex and what do they each secrete?
Zona glomerulosa - Mineralocorticoid
Zona Fasciculata - Glucocorticoids
Zona Reticularis -
Androgens
Medulla - adrenaline and noradrenaline
What is a tumour of the adrenal medulla called?
Phaeochromocytoma (PCC)
What is primary hyperaldosteronism called?
Conn’s syndrome
- treated by surgery or spironolactone (aldosterone antagonist)
What is hypocortisolism called?
Addison’s disease
