Adrenocorticosteroids Flashcards
(23 cards)
Front;Back
Prednisone - Mechanism of Action;Prednisone is converted to prednisolone
its active form. It suppresses inflammation by inhibiting phospholipase A2
Prednisone - Clinical Indication;Used for systemic anti-inflammatory and immune suppression
such as in rheumatoid arthritis
Dexamethasone - Mechanism of Action;Dexamethasone suppresses inflammation by inhibiting phospholipase A2
reducing prostaglandin production
Dexamethasone - Clinical Indication;Commonly used for cerebral edema
inflammation control
Hydrocortisone - Clinical Indication;Used for adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s disease)
as a replacement therapy. It mimics the effects of cortisol
Fludrocortisone - Mechanism of Action;A synthetic mineralocorticoid that increases sodium reabsorption and potassium excretion in the kidney
leading to increased blood volume and blood pressure.
Fludrocortisone - Clinical Indication;Used for adrenal insufficiency and congenital adrenal hyperplasia to regulate sodium and water retention.
Ketoconazole - Mechanism of Action;Inhibits gonadal and adrenal steroid synthesis by blocking the enzyme required for cortisol synthesis. Used for treating Cushing’s syndrome.
Metyrapone - Mechanism of Action;Inhibits 11-deoxycortisol conversion to cortisol
used in diagnosing adrenal insufficiency and treating Cushing’s syndrome during pregnancy.
Aminoglutethimide - Mechanism of Action;Inhibits the conversion of cholesterol to pregnenolone
blocking adrenal and gonadal steroid production
Cortisone - Route of Administration;Administered orally and via IM. Inactive until converted to hydrocortisone
used for inflammation and adrenal insufficiency.
Triamcinolone - Route of Administration;Administered topically
IM
Hydrocortisone - Route of Administration;Administered IV
IM
Dexamethasone - Side Effects;Side effects include hyperglycemia
infection susceptibility
Prednisolone - Side Effects;Side effects include fluid retention
hypertension
Fludrocortisone - Side Effects;Side effects include hypertension
electrolyte imbalance
Methylprednisolone - Clinical Indication;Used for inflammation control
allergic reactions
Spironolactone - Mechanism of Action;Acts as an aldosterone antagonist
reducing sodium reabsorption and increasing potassium retention in conditions like hyperaldosteronism.
Eplerenone - Mechanism of Action;Acts as an aldosterone antagonist
used for treating heart failure and hypertension with reduced risk of gynecomastia compared to spironolactone.
Dexamethasone Suppression Test - Clinical Use;Used for diagnosing Cushing’s syndrome by measuring the suppression of cortisol release following dexamethasone administration.
Cushing’s Syndrome - Diagnostic Use of Glucocorticosteroids;Glucocorticosteroids like dexamethasone are used in diagnostic tests for Cushing’s syndrome due to their ability to suppress ACTH and cortisol levels.
Betamethasone - Use in Premature Birth;Betamethasone is administered IM to accelerate lung maturation in premature infants by increasing surfactant production
reducing the risk of respiratory distress.
