Aesthetic Changes to Teeth Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is the difference between aesthetic and cosmetic dentistry?
- Aesthetic
Doing restorative dentistry with aesthetic materials and principles. - Cosemtic
Carrying out dentistry for fashion purposes, not to treat disease.
Give 3 non-invasive aesthetic therapies in dentistry.
- Tooth whitening
- Orthodontics
- Clip-on smiles.
Give 3 MI/full prep aesthetic treatments.
- Composite additions, composite veneers.
- Porcelain veneers: variable tooth reduction.
- Crowns: metal-ceramic, all-ceramic (+zirconia)
What does ABC stand for in aesthetic dentistry?
- Align
- Bleach
- Composite.
How and what does ABC achieve in aesthetic dentistry?
- Colour correction
Whitening with carbamide peroxide. - Realignment
Orthodontics (fixed or aligners) - Reshaping
Adhesive composite (possibly with ceramic but marginal reduction needed)
How can you show a patient potential results with reshaping of teeth?
Using a template on the patient:
Why does lowering the maxillary incisal edge by 1mm make a smile look 15 years younger?
Because as you get older, the upper lip goes down, so by making teeth look longer, the smile looks younger.
Give 5 ways incisal edge position is established.
- Digital smile design.
- Composite mock-up
- Diagnostic wax-up
- Squash on acrylic trial
- Provisional restorations.
What are the 6 steps in initial composite mock-ups?
dry teeth
add composite with no ETCH/BOND
5 sec cure with LED light
evaluate it with patient
index it
remove it
What are the 5 methods for determining the length of composite on an incisor for a composite mock up?
- Using a williams probe.
- Measuring width of incisior and times by 4/3.
- Combined width of both centrals and times by 2/3.
- Just take a look
- Check provisionals- whilst checking for function, occlusion and phonetics (must be able to say ‘f’ clearly).
What are the 2 different chemicals used for teeth whitening?
- Hydrogen peroxide 6%
- Carbamide peroxide 10-16%
How do teeth whitening solutions chemically whiten teeth
- Free oxygen radicals form in the reaction.
- These break down double bonds in the protein of teeth.
- This changes the refractive index, which in turn changes the colour of the tooth.
What is the chemical equation for hydrogen peroxide 6% use as teeth whitener and how long does the treatment take?

What is the chemical equation for carbamide peroxide 10-16% use as teeth whitener and how long does the treatment take?

Why are teeth over-bleached before composite is added in aesthetic dentistry?
As with teeth whitening there comes regression.
How is composite applied after bleaching?
- Opaque composite used on neck of tooth to replicate mamalons of dentine.
- This is then covered by enamel translucent composite, and the shade of the adjacent tooth is used.
Why can’t composite be applied as soon as bleaching is done, and how long must be left in between bleaching and applying composite?
- Teeth are full of oxygen due to bleaching.
- Oxygen inhibits polymerisation, so composite fails to bond.
- As a result we must wait 2 weeks.
For a cental incisor what 3 finish lines are used?
What is a diastema?
Gaps in between teeth - often seen as black triangles:
How is composite applied to remove diastemas?
- opaque dentine
- dentine
- enamel
To avoid black gingival triangles how much distance should there be from the contact pointes to the crest of interdental bone?
4mm is ideal
What are the steps to making a clip-on smile?
- Composite design mock-up
- Diagnostic wax up
- Copy into acrylic
- Try-in
- Wear it
- Use as a design for veneers later
What are some uses of a clip-on smile?
- Cover any preps before veneers are applied.
- Can replace partial denture.
- Lost denture
What reductions are used for porcelain veneers?
