Adequate health care MUST be provided.

Regarding signs of pain: Cause of pain MUST be determined and pain control instituted. Relief of pain MUST be initiated promptly once it is deemed necessary.
Each institutions MUST have an appropriate OHSP for evaluating human health risks associated with animal contact and MUST take steps to ensure that health risks for each individual are assessed and managed at an acceptable level.
Drug administered to animals destined for human food chain MUST be considered very carefully. MUST be in accordance with the Animal Medicine Drug Use Clarification Act of 1994.
MUST keep records of the following for 3 months:
1. Drugs - Product used, dose, route, duration, name of caretaker, and period of withdrawal
2. Proper withdrawal time MUST be ensured
3. Potentially harmful products - Storage, use, and disposal
Drug residues that MUST be prevented from entering human food chain:
1. Approved drugs used according to label
2. Drugs used extralabel

The compound intended for extra label drug use MUST be manufactured in an FDA-inspected facility. Records of extralabel drug use MUST be maintained for 2 years.
The USDA National Organic Program standards state that the producer of an organic livestock operation MUST not withhold medical treatment from a sick animal in an effort to preserve its organic status. Sick animals MUST be treated using all appropriate medications regardless of their intended organic status.
Restraint devices MUST be maintained regularly.
Physical methods of euthanasia may be used, but MUST minimize stress to the animal prior to euthanasia.
Slaughter of animals for human food MUST comply with Federal Humane Slaughter of Livestock.
If heat is used for sanitation, water temperatures MUST reach 82 C (180 F)
Animals MUST be fed and watered regularly.
