generation effect - claim that within churches and denominations there is a progessive decline where each church is less religious than the previous one
- claim they are half as religious as their parents
- also claim this happens with sects and new age movements
- younger people are less likely to be members of a cult as there is no link to God
- younger people more likely to be involved with NAM as it provides fulfilment
- they may also detach from a cult if they were born into it as they do not agree with it
