- older age groups are growing as a proportion of the population while younger groups are shrinking
- number of aged 65 or over are equal to amount of under-15s for first imr in 2014
- result of increasing life expectancy, decline in IMR, decline in fertility

effects - public services
A
- older people consume larger proportion of services, health and social care, then other age groups
- particularly true for ‘old old’ (75 or over)
- however should be aware of over generalising since many people remain in good health
- may also mean changing policies and provision of housing, transport and more

one person pensioner households
A
- number of pensioners living alone has increased and now account for about 1 in 8 of all households
- most are female as women generally live longer and backseat younger than husbands

dependency ratio
A
- non working old are economically dependant group who need to be provided for by working age (taxes to pay for pensioners and health car)
- number of retired people rises increasing dependant ratio and burden on working population (2015 - 3.2 people for every one pensioner)
- however may be wrong to assume ‘old’ equals ‘economically dependant’ (age of which people can draw pension is riding.
