Agency Theory Flashcards
(9 cards)
Autonomous state
Self governing
In control of one’s decisions
If you are in the autonomous state what are you most likely to do to an order
Disobey
Moral strain
People become uncomfortable with their behaviour because they feel it is wrong and goes against their values
Agentic state
Person allows someone else to direct their behaviour and they diffuse responsibility onto that person so they believe they no longer are to blame
When in the agentic shift what will that participant do when being asked to do something even if they disagree with it morally
They will obey
Examples in milgram where moral strain was showed
Asking the experimenter if the electric shocks were safe and asking if they have to continue
Sweating and nervousness
Example from Milgram’s study that shows participants were in agentic state
65% administered full 450V as a result of following orders from authoritary figure
What real life example shows agentic state
WW2 Nazi solider skilled many under Hitler’s leadership
Claimed they were just following orders
Diffuses blame to leader
Milgram example of diffusion of responsibility
Prods from authoritary figure in lab coat made the teachers feel they were no longer at blame as they believed they didn’t have a choice to stop
