Aggression
Intentional behavior aimed at doing harm or causing pain to another person
Hostile aggression
Aggression stemming from feelings of anger and aimed at inflicting pain
Instrumental aggression
Agression as a means to some goal other than causing pain
Culture of honor
The southern and western regions of the US are characterized by a culture in which white males feel that killing is justifiable:
To protect ones home and property
To defend one’s nor after an insult
Why did culture of honor develop?
A tradition of herding prevailed in the South and West, as opposed to farming in the North

Frustration Aggression Hypothesis
Frustration- The perception that you are being prevented from achieving a goal
FAH- Frustration increases the probability of an aggressive response
-This theory has been revised to state that frustration and anger coupled with cues from the environment can lead to aggression
The Weapon’s Effect
Aggressive stimulus- an object that is associated with aggressive responses (like a gun) and whose mere presence can increase the probability of aggression.
Social Learning Theory
The idea that we learn social behavior by observing others and imitating them
Bandura’s “Bobo” doll study
Children either watched an adult play aggressively with a “bobo” doll or didn’t watch an adult play with the toy(Control group)
The children who watched the adult play aggressively modeled their behavior and also played aggressively
Control children didn’t play aggressively with the doll

The more violent the content of the child’s TV viewing, the more aggressive the child

Desensitization
-Exposure to violent TV dampens emotional response to subsequent violent event
Distorted beliefs
-Exposure to violent TV exaggerates estimates of the frequency of violence in the community
Alcohol in aggression
Alcohol unleashes aggression when people are provoked
Alcohol enhances aggressiveness by reducing people’s self-awareness, by focusing their attention on a provocation, and by people’s mentally associating alcohol with aggression
EX: June 2000, PR Parade- Women sexually assaulted
What doesn’t work: Catharsis
Acting out aggression releases frustration and aggression, thereby decreasing aggressive behavior
Violent pornography & violence against women
Scripts= Causal links in memory between behavior, goals, and action plans.
Pornography:
Distort one’s perceptions of how women actually respond to sexual coercion & increase men’s aggression against women
Pornography contributes to men’s actual aggression toward women.
