Vindication
Offenders must be punished to show that law must be respected and is right.
Example:
Someone who parks in a car park and does not display a parking ticket may get a fine
Deterrence
Aims to put people off committing crimes.
Example:
In some USA states the death penalty is used as a warning to others not to commit a crime
Protection
Keeping the public from being harmed, threatened or injured by criminals.
Example:
Murders, rapists, paedophiles, drug dealers and terrorists.
Retribution
Aim is to get your own back “An eye from an eye” seen as getting revenge
Example:
If you murder, you would be executed
Reformation
To change someone’s behaviour for the better
Example:
Community service orders, therapy sessions to help offenders
Reparation
Help an offender put something back into society.
Example:
If an offender damages property they may be made to pay for the damage
