Q

Outline the stages in Ainsworth’s strange situation

A

1) Baby encouraged to explore
2) Stranger enters, talks to caregiver and approaches baby
3) Caregiver leaves baby and stranger alone
4) Caregiver returns and stranger leaves
5) Caregiver leaves baby alone
6) Stranger returns
7) Caregiver returns & reunited with baby

Q

What behaviours are associated with each attachment style?

A

Secure - Moderate proximity seeking + exploration, show some distress at separation + strangers but easily called, seek + accept comfort from caregiver at reunion
Insecure-resistant High proximity seeking (clingy), little exploration, extreme distress at separation + strangers, at reunion seek comfort but resist it, not easily calmed
Insecure-avoidant - Low proximity-seeking, high exploration, show little distress at separation + strangers, at reunion ignore caregiver + do not seek comfort

Q

Give an advantage of Ainsworth’s strange situation

A

+ Standardised procédure - same in all trials; high IV, also had control of EVs e.g. had multiple observers so high inter observer reliability

Q

Give limitations of Ainsworth’s strange situation

A

— Sampling only studied American & UK babies, only mothers —> low population validity , gender & cultural bias, other collectivist cultures may have less stranger anxiety but be judged as ‘abnormal’
— Ecological validity - took place in a lab rather than homes, unfamiliar setting may have influenced behaviori

Q

Outline study into cultural variations of the strange situation

A

Van Ijzendoorn & Kroonenberg
- meta analysis of 8 countries, examined 32 studies of strange situation
- found:
~ in all countries secure most common
~ but variations in percentages, China had the least secure attachment (50%) vs Britain (75%)
~ collectivist cultures (China, Japan, Israel) had higher rates of insecure-resistant at over 25% and less avoidant
~ more variation within countries than between diff countries
= supports Bowlby’s idea of innate attachment as secure attachment is universal norm; however cultural practices influence this heavily

Q

Evaluate cultural variations of attachment

A

+ Indigenous researchers –> understand cultural context and removes language barriers, enhances validity of findings
Confounding variabkes –> studies not matched for methodology, other factors (I.e. room size) may impact variations
Imposed etic –> test designed for Western cultures used to judge other cultures, I.e. in Germany lack of response at reunion indicates independence ; difficult to compare in different cultures

Q

Outline korean study into cultural variation

A

Jin et al
- used strange situation to assess 87 children
- proportion of insecure and secure babies similar
- of insecure, most were resistant nd one was avoidant
- similar to Japan due to similar child rearing
