1
Q

what classes as air pollution

A

particulate matter, gaseous or volatile organic compounds

2
Q

how many deaths globally are caused by indoor poor air quality

A

1/8 deaths
2million a year
- carbon monoxide
- primary victims are women and children due to time spent in kitchen

3
Q

is ozone good or bad

A
stratospheric = good
tropospheric = bad
4
Q

about ozone

A

GHG, potent poison, absorbs UV

5
Q

when is ozone formed

A

when pollutants emitted by cars, powerplants, industrial boilers, refineries, chemical plants and other sources chemically react in presence of sunlight

  • NO2 reacts with sunlight to form NO and O. oxygen collides with O to form O3 - so when sun goes down it stops
  • cyclic reaction. nothing destroyed just converted back and forth
6
Q

major sink for NO2?

A

atmospheric oxidation

7
Q

effects of ozone/smog on health

A

cilia broken down/dissolve so breathe in particulate matter and get holes in lungs - dangerous to go on runs in cities
effects plants too
