What is the definition of an Air Taxi Service?
Commercial flight ops involving the following:
- Any single engine AC
- Any multi-engine AC that weighs 19000lbs or less (excluding turbo-props)
- 9 pax seats or less
- A multi engine heli certified for VFR
In an Air Taxi Service you are not allowed to have passengers on board in either IFR or night VFR in a single-engine AC unless:
It’s authorized on the Air Operator Certificate and the the AC complies with the Commercial Air Service Standards (like a Cessna Caravan)

For the Pic: A Pilot Proficiency Check (PPC) or Competency Check for that multi engine AC type
For the SIC: A PPC for that multi engine AC type
To act as PIC with passengers the pilot must have: (hours)
5 hours on type for single engine
15 hours on type for multi-engine
Completed company ground school
When is a PPC required?
- PIC of multi-engine AC
- PIC of single engine AC that is operated IFR with pax or night VFR with pax
- PIC of any helicopter
When is a Competency Check required?
- For pilots flying single-engine in Day VFR (pax and cargo), IFR (cargo only), or Night VFR (cargo only)
- For pilots flying SIC on multi-engine under IFR or VFR
When are PPC, Competency Checks, and annual training valid until?
The first day of the 13th month in Air Taxi ops.
May be extended up to 60 days by the minister.
