Airial Observation Flashcards
(18 cards)
Define aerial observation
Aerial observation is defined as systematic search to obtain detailed information of specific target or area. The focus of aerial observation and aerial observation is generally a point target such as a house, car section of a road or any other defined areas
Standards of Aerial observation
Detect the target using visual search technics
Identify the target
Locate target
Report target
What does DETECT include?
It requirers determination that an object or activity exist
What does identify include?
Important factors are size shape and type of armament and whether or not it’s friend or foe
What does location include?
The exact location of the target is the objective os the mission. Big target report center of mass
What does report include?
Provide a SPOT report
Purpose of visual search
Is to detect objects or activities on the ground
Acronym for visual search
Weather
Altitude
Airspeed
Terrain
Cues
Human eye
What does altitude provide
Greater visibility with less details
What are the visual cues?
MCLOSSTTH
Systematic methods include?
Motive, stationary and side-scan
Motive technic
Used when flying at terrain flight altitudes and 10 KIAS or faster.
Either side of the a/c are decided up in 2 sectors. The non-observation sector the work observation sector.
Non-observation sector
Aircrews field of view is limited due to the physical configuration of the aircraft
The observation sector
Is that portion of view at which search activity is confined. Divided in to 2 sectors
Acquisition sector
Observation sector
Acquisition sector is…
The forward 45* of the observation sector. The observer looks forward of the aircraft and through the acquisition sector. The observer scans gradually back towards the aircraft
Recognition sector
Is the remainder of the observation work sector
Stationary technic
Used at NOE altitudes, where the helicopter is hovering at a concealed position. The crewmember makes a quick scan out at approximately 50meters and scans and moves out 50 meters overlapping intervals until the search area is covered
Sidescan technic
Used when aircraft is operating at 100` AGL or higher, at cruise airspeed.
The crew will look out at 1000 meters and search in towards the aircraft.
Then half the distance
And half that distance
And then repeat these procedures
