Airspace Flashcards
(35 cards)
What is the standard reference that defines all UK airspace and where is it published?
UK Aeronautical Information Publication(AIP)
Published by the National Air Traffic Service(NATS)
What are the two FIR’s
The two flight information regions are:
London FIR(south of 55 degrees latitude)
Scottish FIR(North of 55 degrees latitude)
What classes of airspace do we not have in the UK?
Classes B and F
What are the rules for gliders and class A airspace
No entrance unless by special agreement
What is a TMA
A Terminal Maneuvering Area is a volume of controlled airspace set up at the confluence of airways in the vicinity of one or more major airports(typically class a)
What are the bounds of class C airspace?
Above FL195
What are the rules for gliders in Class C airspace?
-Must listen on the correct radio frequency
-Must be on standard pressure altimeter
-Must carry a means of navigation
-Must remain in VMC:
-1500M horizontal from cloud
-1000ft vertically from cloud
-8KM visibility
What are the rules for class D airspace for gliders
Can fly if given clearance but should spend minimum amount of time there
Rules for class D airspace at less than 140kts:
At 3000ft or below:
-Clear or cloud
-In sight of ground
-Vis of 5km
At above 3000ft:
-same as class C but 5km vis instead of 8KM
What is the boundary for a TMZ
A Red string of semi circles
What are the rules for class E airspace and Transmission mandatory zones?
Gliders can penetrate without clearance if correctly equipped:
-Must comply with VFR
-No radio call is required but gliders must “receive traffic n n
information as far as is practical
-Pilots must use a MODE S transponder when in IFR or above FL195
What is class G airspace and what are the rules?
Any uncontrolled airspace. No rules
What is an Airway?
Airways are corridors, usually 10nm wide. They are almost always class A
Can a glider enter a Control zone?
No unless with specific agreement
What are the rules for calling up a controller?
As it is a non gliding frequency, you should have an R/T licence
What are visual reporting points used for?
VRP’s are used when giving your position to the controllers
What must you do before entering and while in an ATZ?
-Call on the published frequency
-State the need to enter the zone
-State your position and intentions
-While in the ATZ you must remain on frequency
What is the maximum size of an ATZ?
2000ft above airfield and 2.5nm RADIUS from midpoint of longest runway
What are the rules for a MATZ?
None as long as the ATZ is not penetrated
What is the size of a MATZ?
5nm RADIUS circle that extends to 3000ft AGL
Stubs are either side and are 5nm long, 4nm wide and extend from 1000ft AGL to 3000ft AGL
How are ATZ’s and MATZ’s shown?
dotted circles MATZ bigger than ATZ
Is flight allowed in prohibited areas?
No, all flight is prohibited
How are prohibited areas, restricted areas shown?
Maroon circle with hatching
Can gliders penetrate restricted areas?
Some but not all
Must comply with restrictions
