Q

Hibiscus Health Speech

A

I recently led a strategic consulting project for a startup with innovative AI facial scanning technology. They had promising technology but needed direction on which healthcare applications to pursue first.

We tackled this systematically. First, we defined the core problem: identifying high-value expansion opportunities that aligned with their technical capabilities while offering significant market potential.

Our market analysis examined growth trends across healthcare segments and pinpointed clinical applications with substantial unmet needs. We didn’t just look at market size—we deeply analyzed the competitive landscape in each potential application area to find differentiated entry points.

On the technical side, we evaluated their algorithm’s adaptability to new use cases and assessed the feasibility of detecting specific biomarkers for different conditions. My background in at-home diagnostics product development was particularly valuable here, as it led me to propose exploring dental applications - an innovative direction they hadn’t considered. I recognized that oral health represents a significantly underserved health concern despite its connection to numerous systemic conditions. Their facial scanning technology could potentially detect oral biomarkers that indicate various health conditions, creating an entirely new category for everyday health monitoring in an area with substantial unmet needs. This technical assessment was crucial for ensuring we didn’t recommend applications beyond their near-term capabilities, while still pushing the boundaries of what their technology could achieve in addressing important health gaps.

The business modeling phase quantified potential revenue streams and ROI for each opportunity. We outlined partnership strategies with existing healthcare stakeholders and—critically—mapped the regulatory pathway requirements by application. My background in developing molecular diagnostics for respiratory and sexual health applications proved invaluable here, as I understood the nuances of different regulatory approaches.

Finally, we delivered a prioritized implementation roadmap that balanced technical feasibility, market size, and implementation timeline. The recommendations included a phased approach with clear milestones and decision points.

The outcome exceeded expectations. The client implemented our recommendations in their product development strategy, focusing first on applications we identified as “quick wins” while building toward more complex opportunities. The project showcased how strategic analysis can transform promising technology into targeted commercial applications with real-world impact.
