1
Q

common preparation of aldehydes and ketones list EVERY way

A

1) oxidation of alcohols: primary gives aldehyde and secondary gives ketone in the presence of CrO3/PCC
2) dehydrogenation of alcohols: for volatile solutes, passing vapors over heated copper at 573 K primary gives aldehyde and secondary gives ketone
3) ozonolysis of alkenes after which, treated with zinc dust and water to form aldehydes, ketones, or both
4) Hydration of alkynes in the presence of HgSO4 and H2SO4, forming an alkene which then rearranges itself- only ethyne gives aldehyde, all other alkynes give ketones (follow markovnikov rule)
