(32 cards)
Compression
A transformation that pushed the points of a graph horizontally towards the y-axis or vertically to the x-axis
Correlation
A measure of the strength and direction of the relationship between two variables
Line of best fit
The line that comes closest to all of the points in a data set
Parent Function
The simplest function with the defining characteristics of the family. Functions in the same family are transformations of their parent function.
Reflection
A transformation that reflects or “flips” a graph or figure across a line, called the line of reflection. Each reflected point is the same distance from the line but on the opposite side.
Stretch
A transformation that pulls the points of a graph horizontally away from the y-axis or vertically away from the x-axis
Translation
A transformation that shifts or slides every points of a figure or graph the same distance in the same direction
Transformation
A change in the position, size, or shape of a figure or graph
Axis of Symmetry
A line that circles a plane figure or a graph into two congruent reflected halves
Binomial
A polynomial with two terms.
X+Y or 2a^2+3
Complete the Square
A process used to form a perfect square trinomial, to complete the square of x^2+bx, add (b/2)^2
Complete Conjugate
The complex conjugate of any complex number
Complex Number
Any number that can be written as a+bi, where a+b are real numbers and i=square root of -1
Complex Plane
A set of coordinate axes in which the horizontal axis is the real axis and the vertical axis is the imaginary axis, used to graph complex numbers
Discriminant
The discriminant of the quadratic equation ax^2+bx+c=0 is b^2-4ac
Imaginary #
The square root of a negative number, written in the form bi where b is a real number and i is the imaginary unit square root of -1
Imaginary Part
For complex number of the form a+bi, the real number b is called the imaginary part, represented graphically as b units on the imaginary axis of a complex plane
Max value
The y-value of the highest point on the graph
Min value
the y-value of the lowest point on the graph
Parabola
The shape on the graph of a quadratic function
Quadratic Function
A function that can be written in the form f(x)=ax^2+bx+c or in the form f(x)=a(x-h)^2+k
Quadratic inequality
Inequalities that are y>(or equal to) ax^2+bx+c, y>ax^2+bx+c, y>ax^2+bx+c, y<(or equal to)ax+bx+c
Real Part
For a complex number of the form a+bi, a is the real part
Root of an equation
Any value of the variable that makes the equation true
