(21 cards)
What is an expression in mathematics?
A group of numbers and letters but with no equal sign
Example: 2n² + 2n - 3
What is an equation in mathematics?
A group of numbers and letters but has an equal sign
Example: 2n² + 2n - 3 = 0
What is a polynomial?
One or more terms joined by addition or subtraction, each term must have a whole number exponent and cannot have the exponent in the denominator.
Define a term in mathematics.
A number, variable, or product of numbers and variables.
Examples: -3, 6, n, n³, 5n²
What is a variable?
Any letter that is in the place of a number, multiple numbers can take the place of a single variable.
Examples: a, b, n
What is a coefficient?
A number that is joined with a variable by multiplication.
Examples: In 9b, Coeff. = 9; In n², Coeff. = 1; In 2x² - 3x, Coeff. = 2, -3
What is a constant in mathematics?
A number by itself that doesn’t change when the variable changes.
Example: In bx + 9, Const. = 9
Fill in the blank: A polynomial can be classified as one or more terms joined by _______.
addition or subtraction
True or False: A polynomial can have negative exponents.
False
Fill in the blank: In the expression 4a² - 3a - 8, the Coeff. of a² is _______.
4
Fill in the blank: In the expression 4a² - 3a - 8, the Const. is _______.
-8
What is a monomial?
1 term
Examples include 5x, b, -b³
What is a binomial?
2 terms
Examples include 5x + 3, 7g° + 2h, -4m + 2
What is a trinomial?
3 terms
Example: 6y + 7y - 8
What determines the degree of a polynomial?
The term with the highest exponent
Example: In 4a² - 8a + 9a°, the degree is 2
What is the degree of the polynomial 2h² - 3h³ + 8h?
4
The degree is determined by the highest exponent, which is 3
What is the degree of the polynomial n³ - 3567?
3
The highest exponent is 3
How are polynomials written?
In descending order based on the value of the exponent
Coefficients do not affect the order of the terms
True or False: Coefficients play a role in the order of polynomial terms.
False
The order is based solely on the exponents
Fill in the blank: A _______ degree polynomial has no terms with variables.
0th
What should you watch for when working with polynomials?
Negative signs
Ensure to transfer them with the correct numbers
